Enabling ElecLink to keep up with the pace of the ever-changing energy industry
challenge
challenge
ElecLink operates a high-voltage interconnector cable through the Channel Tunnel, linking France and Great Britain. With a capacity of 1000MW—enough to power 1 million homes for a year—it provides a sustainable and stable energy trading solution between the two countries.
Recognising the need to modernise ahead of many other interconnectors, ElecLink partnered with Supercharge to enhance their offering to market participants. Together, we developed Helix, a new nomination platform that supports smoother, more informed decision-making for traders, addressing the demands of a rapidly evolving and dynamic market.
Building on a rock-solid technical core, tailored for niche interconnector needs
approach
approach
With a track record in delivering high-performance nomination platforms, we know exactly which architectural, operational, engineering, and design elements can make or break such a system. Building on this expertise, we developed ElecLink’s new platform using our industry-proven solution core. This robust foundation took care of the platform’s most critical functions, allowing us to focus entirely on fine-tuning the solution to ElecLink’s specific needs and operations.

1. The solution core: At the heart of Helix is Superflow - our solution core – built to meet the unique integration and operational demands of the interconnector domain. Its microservice-based architecture supports flexible customisation and rapid scaling, while full cloud management ensures seamless updates, continuous availability, zero downtime rolling deployments, and strong regional failover—keeping ElecLink’s operations reliable under all circumstances.

2. Customisation: With the technical core in place, we concentrated on customising the platform to ElecLink’s specific operations. Guided by their business insights, we aligned the solution with strategic priorities from day one. We integrated essential systems to support ElecLink’s most business-critical processes, including outsourcing the auction workflow to the Joint Allocation Office (JAO) and automating communication with Transmission System Operators (TSOs), resulting in a more efficient and streamlined platform.

3. Ongoing improvements: Given the dynamic nature of the interconnector space, where regulations can change rapidly, we designed Helix with built-in adaptability. This flexibility enables the platform to quickly integrate new functions and respond to industry and regulatory shifts, ensuring it remains ahead of evolving requirements.

This approach enabled us to deliver a resilient, future-ready software more quickly and with reduced risk (in less than 15 months), fully aligned with ElecLink’s strategic priorities.

Streamlined trading, real-time decisions, and always-on support in one platform

    solution
When creating Helix, our goal was to build a solution that enables ElecLink and its market participants to manage nominations in real-time. Integrated with ten external third parties—such as Transmission System Operators, regulatory entities and ElecLink's dispatch system—Helix acts as a one-stop shop, consolidating all essential market data in one place. The new platform eliminates information silos, giving users seamless access to everything they need for efficient and streamlined trading, while managing the technical complexity of integration with other energy market players.

Helix also automates the management of interconnector capacity based on external inputs—such as limitations set by national transmission system operators (TSOs) to maintain grid stability. By integrating with the Joint Allocation Office (JAO), leading service provider for TSOs, the platform also seamlessly exchanges transmission rights (the legal entitlement to transfer electricity) and curtailment information (data on capacity restrictions). This automation eliminates the need for manual intervention, reducing errors, speeding up decision-making, and enhancing operational efficiency—ultimately enabling smoother, faster cross-border energy trading.

Beyond designing and developing Helix, we also ensure its ongoing, reliable operation through our industry-leading Technical Support service. Our 24/7/365 support team handles general enquiries and serves as the first responder for incidents. For more complex technical issues, our second- and third-line support teams are always just a phone call away—guaranteeing consistent service excellence, the Supercharge way.
