Basic-Fit, Europe’s largest gym chain with over 1,000 clubs, offers affordable, unlimited memberships that include access to in-person and virtual fitness classes, group workouts, and personalized online coaching to support healthier routines.
Millions of members rely on the Basic-Fit app to enhance their fitness journeys through personalized workout plans, video-guided exercises, and smart device integration for tracking progress. With detailed analytics, the app helps users stay on track, ensuring safe, effective workouts tailored to their goals.
As a leader in retail fitness, Basic-Fit understands that habit formation is the greatest obstacle to building consistent workout routines. The demands of work, family, and daily responsibilities often derail brief bursts of motivation, making it challenging to sustain regular gym attendance.
Committed to helping their subscribers adopt a lasting healthy lifestyle, Basic-Fit decided to rethink their approach, drawing on behavior design and habit formation psychology. After discovering our whitepaper on transforming apps into habit-building tools, the Basic-Fit team partnered with Supercharge’s behavior design experts.
They approached us to evaluate their mobile app and collaborate on enhancing it as a powerful tool to help customers kickstart and sustain their fitness habits.
Our collaboration started with a systematic analysis of the mobile app. Our team conducted a meticulous expert evaluation of how the app’s functionality, user experience and visual experience support people in developing their fitness routines through the lens of the habit loop. We created a visually explained, screen-by-screen report of the current app experience along with functional recommendations and UX concept ideas illustrating the proposed changes and additional features lined up for the mission of habit forming.
Built on the habit loop model, the new app strategy primarily centers around newcomers, to make their first three months at the clubs a success, that builds the foundations for sustainable future routines.
Similar to having a personal fitness coach at your disposal in the club, the app offers practical guidance to users in creating a workout schedule that aligns with their motivation and lifestyle. Its goal is to transform lofty fitness aspirations, such as becoming fitter or stronger, into feasible, motivating, and trackable steps that users can realistically implement.
The personalized recommendation system plays a vital role in overcoming the challenge of "choice paralysis," ensuring that every user discovers workouts tailored to their fitness goals and levels.
The app strategy incorporates a balanced mix of gamification elements, including thematic challenges, a custom badge system, and progress tracking. These features not only boost motivation but also reinforce the right habits to support users on their fitness journey.
Through our collaboration, we delivered Basic-Fit a strategic roadmap, enriched with features designed to drive user engagement and support habit formation. Along with the roadmap, we provided concrete design concepts to translate these ideas into actionable improvements.
Our partnership then moved into the execution phase, where our experts offered ongoing reviews and consultancy to ensure the smooth implementation of these enhancements.
