Enabling Eleclink to keep up with the pace of the ever-changing energy industry
challenge
challenge
Eleclink operates a high-voltage interconnector cable through the Channel Tunnel, linking France and Great Britain. With a capacity of 1,000 MW, it provides a sustainable and stable energy transmission solution between the two countries.
Recognising the need to modernise, Eleclink partnered with Supercharge to enhance their offering to market participants. Together, we deployed Helix—a new nomination platform that enables smoother, more informed decision-making for traders, automates Eleclink’s customers’ day-to-day activities, and meets the demands of a rapidly evolving, dynamic market.
Relying on a rock-solid technical core tailored for niche interconnector needs
approach

With a track record of delivering high-performance nomination platforms in the complex and regulated interconnector space, we know exactly which operational, architectural, engineering, and design elements are critical to success. Drawing on this expertise, we built Eleclink’s new platform using our industry-proven solution core. This robust foundation handled the platform’s most critical functions, enabling us to focus on fully tailoring the solution to Eleclink’s unique needs and operations, which we mapped out during an intense one-month Discovery and Design phase.

1. The solution core: At the heart of Helix is our solution core, built to meet the unique integration and operational demands of the interconnector domain. Its microservice-based architecture enables flexible customisation and rapid scaling, while full cloud management ensures seamless updates, continuous availability, zero-downtime rolling deployments, and robust regional failover, keeping Eleclink’s operations reliable in all circumstances.

2. Business-driven adaptation: With the technical core in place, we concentrated on adapting the solution to Eleclink’s specific operations. Guided by their business insights, we aligned the solution with strategic priorities from day one. We integrated essential systems to support Eleclink’s most business-critical processes, including outsourcing the auction workflow to the Joint Allocation Office (JAO) and automating communication with Transmission System Operators (TSOs), resulting in a more efficient and streamlined platform.

3. Ongoing improvements: Given the dynamic nature of the interconnector space, where regulations can change rapidly, we designed Helix with built-in adaptability. This flexibility enables the platform to quickly integrate new functions and respond to industry and regulatory shifts, ensuring it remains ahead of evolving requirements.

Building on our solution core, Superflow, enabled us to deliver resilient, future-ready software more quickly and with reduced risk, in less than 9 months, fully aligned with Eleclink’s strategic priorities.

Streamlined nominations, real-time decisions, and always-on support in one platform

    solution
When developing Helix, we aimed to create a solution that enables Eleclink and its market participants to manage nominations in real-time. Integrated with ten external third parties—including TSOs, regulatory entities, and Eleclink’s dispatch system—Helix consolidates all essential market data in one platform. This eliminates information silos and provides users with seamless access to everything needed for efficient trading.

Helix also automates the management of interconnector capacity based on external inputs, such as limitations set by TSOs to maintain grid stability. By integrating with the Joint Allocation Office (JAO), the leading service provider for TSOs, the platform also fetches transmission rights (the legal entitlement to transfer electricity) and curtailment information (data on capacity restrictions). This automation removes the need for manual intervention, prevents errors, accelerates decision-making, and further enhances operational efficiency, ultimately enabling more stable, faster cross-border energy trading.

In addition to the platform’s design and development, we ensure ongoing reliability with our 24/7/365 technical support service. Our support team handles inquiries and serves as the first responder for incidents, while second- and third-line teams are available for more complex issues, ensuring consistent service excellence.
